Sweets and Stories of Men…and Lots of Chocolate

Erin Bolger’s book, The Happy Baker:  A Girl’s Guide to Emotional Baking, is a cookbook, but it’s also one woman’s story of the trials and tribulations of dating.  Funny and charming, her stories are the kind every woman can relate to, and the recipes are sure to make anyone feeling down from the dating scene feel instantly better.

Bolger tells her dating tales with humor, and the recipe names correspond to her dating adventures.  Recipes with names like “Me+You-You=Ice Cream Cookie Sundae”, “Me And My Cookies Are So Over You”, “My Mom Didn’t Like You Anyway Cupcake”, and “My Eggs Are Not Getting Any Younger Creme Brulee”  help complete the story she tells throughout the book.  Along with the stories and the recipes are fantastic photos of each goodie.  The result is a cookbook that not only gives recipes but attaches sentiment to the baked goods the reader can make.

Particularly impressive is how candid the author is.  Even if some of her stories have been embellished, Erin Bolger puts them out into the public, warts and all.  That she includes a picture of herself from middle school, a time most of us would prefer not be remembered, and it shows her with a red afro is truly brave.

Some parts of the book are more serious, such as the section about her being dumped through email (a pox on that guy’s house!), but even in those sections, Bolger continues the theme of the book:  single or attached, there is a genuine happiness to be found in making a homemade treat to enjoy.  In The Happy Baker:  A Girl’s Guide to Emotional Baking, Erin Bolger has taken what is often seen as a negative-eating when you’re down-and turned it into a wonderful cookbook.

Enjoy!
